Defeet
was launched in May 2008 by Camilla and Chris Swash.
We came up with the idea for Defeet one summer evening;
sitting in the garden we saw a huge slug slither past
half fallen off copper tape, into a pot of herbs. We
started talking about how much damage they had done to
our potted plants and what else we could do to stop them,
when Chris had a flash of inspiration. He came up with
the idea of some kind of copper pot feet. We made some
prototypes and were delighted with the results. For the
first time we realised what hostas were meant to look
like!
Encouraged by programmes like ‘Dragons Den’ we
decided to patent the idea and start producing Defeet.
We are really excited by this venture and believe Defeet
are the best organic way of keeping pots slug and snail
free.
We live in London with our two young children and are
lucky enough to have a biggish garden. The gardens behind
us are of an equal size, so we look out onto a sizeable
green oasis in the middle of the city. When we moved into
our flat, in 2001 the garden was a pretty barren patch
with nothing but a ropey lawn, huge privet hedge and a
massive diseased and dying poplar tree.
Over the years we have slowly transformed it. We have
never had a master plan; it has just evolved over the years.
We now have a large patio, home to many potted plants (and
slugs and snails that inspired 'Defeet'), a lawn, borders,
a pond, vegetable patch, shed, cold frames and two compost
bins. It's not a show garden, but it is a great place to
relax and be a bit closer to nature.
